Swanky Magazine Interviews talented photographer - Matthew Pitts

PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT | Matthew Pitts, Columbus OH

We caught up with Matthew to ask him a little more about his incredible journey, and what he has been doing recently!

Q1.Swanky Mag: Hello Matthew, Can you introduce yourself to Swanky Magazine's readers? Can you tell us a little about you?

Glad to. I’m a photographer, poet, comedian, show host, and middle child from Columbus. I really love art and conversation so this is kind of my jam.

Q2.How and when did you get into photography?

Honestly, my wife would say that the hardest thing for me to do is relax and that's probably right. Most of what I do outside of my 9-5 is fairly performance-driven. But when everything was shut down I kind of ran out of things to do performance-wise. So with my wife’s encouragement, I jumped into photography. Almost a year and 80+ publications later here I am.

Q3.What does photography mean to you?

Another arm of what I love most when it comes to art. Story Telling.

Q4.Please briefly describe your photography style for our readers.

Recently I’ve been getting the compliment that I capture melanin really well which is just to say I really love bringing out the beauty of my people. I would say my style is fairly malleable. It just brings out the beauty of what's already there.

Q5.Where do you get inspiration from?

Everything. And All the time. I can’t really shut it off, to be honest. I’ll be writing a poem for a show and then all of a sudden some set design will come to mind. Then I’ll be writing a script and it turns into a joke.

Q6. Do you think in advance what you want in the picture?

I typically do and I’m typically wrong. Lol. I’ll think I know for sure how the subject interacts in this space but then something else will come alive in the shoot.

Q7. Would you consider yourself a hobbyist or a paid professional?

Professional. I might have said differently back in January. But Since then I’ve set goals, published in a lot of magazines a lot of times, and have been pushing my craft forward. Most of the people I work with starting their publishing careers with my work.  I’m pushing myself to get better but I’m incredibly comfortable stating my price at this point because I know what I can produce.

Q8. What has been your most memorable session and why?

I’m not sure. They’re all memorable for different reasons I think.

Q9. Nikon or Canon? Favorite lens?

So far sony but I’m not a huge operation yet so I’ve only worked with two consistently.

Q10. What is one piece of advice you would like to offer a new photographer looking to start their own business?

Start! So many artists are too intimidated by the first step. Just do whatever you can to start. You’ll figure things out.

Q11. What do you think of our new magazine?

I think you have cultivated an amazing sense of what looks right and what looks good on the page. I’m incredibly excited for all of the work that you were going to be able to do and put out into the world.
